I started
homeschooling mainly for religious regions. My husband, Kevin, and I
are Christians, and since Christ has been pretty much taken out of the
public school classroom setting, homeschooling was the only option for
us to be able to give our kids a true Christian education.
Private schools were never an option due to the expense. We had always
thought about homeschooling, even before we had children. I knew
several other families who homeschooled, and I liked what I saw.
After I taught seventh grade for four and a half years, our choice was
final. I saw enough of what went on in the school where I taught not to
want my children to be in that type of setting.
Now that
I have homeschooled for almost eight years, my reasons have somewhat
changed. In addition to the importance of being able to teach biblical
values, I truly enjoy being with my daughters, who will be in eighth,
sixth and second grades next year. I would never trade the years I have
spent by their side, seeing the light bulb go on with sounding out
words, the times we have learned math by baking, and the fun of reading
books together out loud around the lunch table, along with the time
spent working with them doing their regular assignments. And the time
passes so quickly. I can hardly believe my oldest is already going into
the eighth grade.
