Review: Not a classic, but good: "Gettysburg" by Stephen Sears will never be considered the definitive one-volume work on the battle of Gettysburg. It is classic Sears. Well written, adroitly researched, and has reliable maps. This is a good book for a novice just entering the realm of the battle of Gettysburg. As such it should inspire additional study, and on that account it succeeds. After authoring a number of well received works on the American Civil War it appears Sears was persuaded by his publisher to take advantage of his name and that of Gettysburg to sell books.
